Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about making sped up and nightcore songs.
A sped up song is a version of a track played faster than the original. Speeding it up also lifts the pitch, giving brighter, more energetic — sometimes "chipmunk" — vocals. Sped up (and nightcore) versions exploded on TikTok and YouTube. KeyPitch lets you speed up any song in your browser, with no software to install.
Upload your MP3, WAV, M4A or MP4 file to KeyPitch, then tap the "Speed Up" pad for the classic sound — it sets the speed to ×1.30, raises the key by 2 semitones, lifts the pitch to 462.8 Hz and adds 7% reverb. Prefer to dial it in yourself? Drag the Speed, Key, Pitch and Reverb sliders. Preview the result, then click Download to open it in the KeyPitch Audio Studio and export.
"Sped up" means the song's tempo is increased, usually to around 120–150% of the original speed, so it feels faster, brighter and more energetic. As the speed rises the pitch rises with it, which is why sped up vocals sound higher. The result is punchy and upbeat — perfect for fast-paced edits.
Sped up versions are shorter, catchier and higher-energy, which fits the fast, snappy pace of TikTok and YouTube Shorts. They make hooks hit sooner and pair perfectly with dance and transition edits, so creators use sped up songs to grab attention in the first seconds — and many have charted as official "sped up" releases.
Most sped up edits sit between ×1.20 and ×1.50 of the original speed. Around ×1.30 — the KeyPitch "Speed Up" preset — is the sweet spot: noticeably faster and brighter but still clear. Push toward ×1.50 for a full nightcore feel, or stay near ×1.15 for a subtle lift that keeps the vocals natural.
The chipmunk effect is what happens when you speed audio up enough that the pitch rises sharply, making voices sound high and squeaky — like Alvin and the Chipmunks. It comes from speed and pitch moving together. With KeyPitch you control how strong it is: speed up while keeping the pitch natural, or raise the Key for the full chipmunk sound.
They overlap. Nightcore is a specific style — a song sped up with a higher pitch, usually paired with anime artwork — that started the trend. "Sped up" is the broader, modern term popularised on TikTok for any faster, higher-pitched edit. Make either with KeyPitch: tap Speed Up, then push the Key slider higher for a stronger nightcore feel.
They are opposites. Sped up makes a song faster and higher in pitch — bright and energetic — while slowed + reverb makes it slower, lower and dreamy. They are the two most popular ways to remix a track for TikTok. KeyPitch does both: speed a song up here, or use the Slowed + Reverb tool to take it the other way.
Traditionally, yes — speeding a tape or record up also pushes the pitch higher, which is the classic sped up and chipmunk sound. That happened because older tools couldn't separate pitch from speed. KeyPitch decouples them, so you have full control: speed a song up while keeping the pitch natural, or raise it on purpose. The "Speed Up" preset lifts the key by 2 semitones and sets the pitch to 462.8 Hz (up from the 440 Hz standard) for extra brightness, and you can fine-tune both any time with the Key and Pitch sliders.
Yes. Upload an MP4 video and KeyPitch applies the sped up effect to its audio while keeping the picture in sync, so you can export a ready-to-post clip for TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. You can also upload just the audio (MP3, WAV or M4A) if you only need the sound.
Upload your track, tap the "Speed Up" pad, then push the Speed slider toward ×1.40–×1.50 and raise the Key a few more semitones for that bright, high-pitched nightcore signature. Preview until it feels energetic but still clear, then download — your nightcore edit opens in the Audio Studio ready to export.
Yes. You can upload a song, speed it up and preview it for free, with no signup. The full Audio Studio adds extra controls — fine speed and key tuning, reverb, bass boost, 8D audio and more — for the perfect export.
KeyPitch accepts MP3, WAV, M4A and MP4 files up to 50 MB and 10 minutes long. Once your sped up track is in the Audio Studio, you can export it as MP3 or WAV — or as an MP4 if you uploaded a video.
Yes. KeyPitch runs entirely in your mobile browser, so you can make a sped up edit on an iPhone or Android phone with no app download. Upload from your device, tap the effect, preview and download — perfect for creating TikTok and Reels audio on the go.
No. KeyPitch uses high-quality time-stretching, so speeding a song up stays clean and clear rather than glitchy. For the best result, start from a WAV or high-bitrate MP3 source. Very large speed increases naturally shorten the track and raise the pitch, so preview to find the sweet spot for your song.
Once you are happy with the preview, click "Download your sped up track". The file opens in the KeyPitch Audio Studio with your speed, key and reverb settings already applied, where you choose the format and export the finished song to your device.
